During the course, a performative production set at the court of Elizabeth I, titled "Sound and sweet airs" (The Tempest, Act III, Scene 2), will be developed. Part of the work will be devoted to staging, constructing an essential dramaturgy, and immersing in the historical characters. The students, who will be involved both as dancers and musicians, must actively participate in building the show, understanding the close link between dance and music and confidently switching from one role to the other. One of the course's objectives is to offer musicians—accustomed to the technical movements of small joints—the opportunity to become aware of their entire body, transforming it into an expressive musical instrument. Students are invited to always bring their own musical instruments to the lessons, as during the seminar everyone will have the chance to play or dance the proposed music. Every singer or musician participating in this experience aims to enrich their way of expressing themselves through more complete and authentic participation, often freeing themselves from the constraints of purely instrumental performance.

Course contents and description

Music and Dance in Shakespeare's Works

Shakespeare's works feature numerous references to dance, testifying to the importance of this art in European culture between the Renaissance and the early Baroque. In Henry IV (Act III, Scene 5), for example, the Volta and the "lively" corrente are mentioned; in All's Well That Ends Well (Act II, Scene 1), the canary is cited, described as a dance performed with diabolical vigor and dash; in Much Ado About Nothing (Act II, Scene 1), Beatrice and Leonato discuss love and marriage by comparing them to a Scottish jig, a basse danse, and a galliard. Following this theme, the seminar proposes a study of music and dance from the late Renaissance to the early Baroque. The lesson will begin with a targeted physical warm-up, including exercises for coordination between upper and lower limbs and an initial approach to steps and sequences from dance treatises published between 1581 and 1651. The proposed pieces will include pavanes, galliards, moresche, and country dances by major Italian composers and from various English sources, including the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book. Participants will then work in small musical ensembles to accompany the studied choreographies live.

Suitable attire for movement is required: comfortable pants, anti-slip socks, or dance shoes. Heeled shoes, boots, or sneakers are not permitted.

Students must both play music and dance.
